Spring Term 1 2010

 This term our main topic is called OURSELVES. This is a science topic, which will include how we grow and change, our five senses and the importance of healthy eating.

Science

Our main focus this term will be a science topic which is then linked into all the other curriculum areas. The children will be looking at how we grow and change and how other animals have a similar life cycle. They will learn about the five senses, the ways we differ from one another and the importance of healthy eating. In order to assist us with how we grow and change, we would be grateful if the children could bring some photos of themselves when they were babies and toddlers. If you have any books or artefacts that you feel could help us with our topic please bring them along. We like to encourage the children to makes links between learning in school and at home.

During Literacy this term the children will be looking at:

Fiction reading and writing

Non-Fiction linked to the Senses and Healthy Eating

Poetry reading and writing

Please continue to read regularly with your child, encouraging them to talk about the text and to predict what might happen next and how the text makes them feel. The children will continue to get spellings/sentences, so please encourage your child to write them using the look, say, cover, write, check method before they use the words in sentences, as this will help to improve both their written work and their reading. They are sent home on a Monday to be returned by Friday. The children are also given a list of high frequency words to learn to read. Please help them to learn these words as they support their reading.

· Recognise, count and order numbers to at least 20 and back;

· Understand the vocabulary related to addition and subtraction to describe and record number sentences;

· Say how many tens and units are in a two digit number;

· Derive and recall all pairs of numbers with a total of 10, and addition facts for totals to at least 5;

· Visualise and name common 2-D shapes and 3-D solids and describe their features;

· Answer a question by recording information in lists and tables, and present outcomes using practical resources, pictures, block graphs or pictograms.

It is vitally important to link maths to everyday life. You could help your child by practising counting small amounts of coins and finding totals; looking at objects and packaging at home and in shops. Ask your child to identify cubes, cuboids, cylinders, spheres and pyramids. Try giving them simple word problems using addition and subtraction. If they can see how maths supports their everyday lives it helps them to understand the reasons behind the learning that takes place in school.

· PE days are Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure that your child has a complete PE kit in school consisting of a T-shirt, shorts, and good fitting plimsols.

Thank you to all those parents who have sent in voluntary weekly contributions of 50p. We are hoping to have enough soon to provide the children with some new and exciting learning resources!

Many thanks for your co-operation.
